Goal-Setting for Businesses

Don’t be mediocre, become the best with PCR’s business goal-setting services!

We’ve all seen those motivational posters that say, ‘A goal without a plan is just a dream,’ but as cliché, as it sounds, it’s the absolute truth. You’ll be well aware that things don’t just ‘happen’ in business, which is why goal-setting and creating a game plan is imperative to accomplishing your goals.

— What Are Your Business Goals?

Have you created goals for your business? If so, what do they look like? How will you accomplish them? When will you achieve them? These are just some of the questions to consider when setting goals.

Whether you want to hire more staff, expand into new locations, stick to a budget, pay off debts, improve efficiency or just make more money, we can help you create a game plan to get you where you want to be.

Not sure what you want when it comes to dollar terms? Worry not, our expert business planning advice means we specialise in helping you create goals that are actually achievable. By following the SMART framework, you can grow your business and turn your non-dollar goals into reality through a structured game plan.

Set SMART Goals for Your Business

Goals are of little use if you do not measure your progress. Without measuring progress, you cannot evaluate success or failure. You should have some sort of objective way to measure them—whether that’s a deadline, a number, a percentage change, or some other measurable element.

One way to do this is with benchmarks. Benchmarks show you what’s “normal” for specific, recurring scenarios in your company, so you know what to expect. Using standardized benchmarks, you can set more relevant goals that are easier to measure. Think of this the same way you would think about KPIs for employees. What is the expectation and how will you know when it has been met and what standard it has been completed to?

While many of us would love to set a goal to see a profit of 100 million in one year, the reality is that is not achievable for many small businesses. This is where creating achievable goals is crucial.

The goals you are setting goals must be conceivable. Achievable says that your goals shouldn’t be totally outside the realm of possibility. Ask yourself this question: Is the goal within your project scope? If not, it’s not achievable.

There is little value in setting goals that are not relevant to your business. While personal goals are great, your business goals should align with the direction and growth targets you have for your business. For example, having a goal to clean the storeroom is probably not going to help you hit the profit margin you are aiming for.

Ensure your goal matters to you and aligns with your other goals and the needs of the organisation. As a business coach external to your business, we can help keep your goals relevant to your business.

Your goals should have an end date. Without a time limit, your project could drag on. Deadlines ultimaltey provide a sense of urgency so that short-term tasks don’t drag into long-term goals unnecessarily.

Deadlines are crucial to implementing goals, since they pretty much force you to take action. If you want to have more focus time at work, you can decide to set a goal to only check your email for 30 minutes every day. But without a deadline, it’s easy to brush it off. Imagine instead if you set a goal to only check your email for 30 minutes every day for one week—now, it starts to feel more attainable.
